Ishmat Habib is the 2024 laureate of the crossed residency programme organised by CEAAC (FR), MeetFactory and Institut français de Prague (CZ). He will be hosted by CEAAC in Strasbourg from May to July, working at Bastion 14.
Ishmat Habib lives and works between Prague and Frankfurt. He studied at the Indonesian Institute of Arts in Yogyakarta (2017-2021), spent a semester at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague in 2021 as part of an exchange programme, and graduated as a Meisterschüler (2021-2023) at the Städelschule, Frankfurt am Main, under the guidance of Professor Willem de Rooij.
His painting practice is based on Javanese philosophy. The artist works with the memory of places and oral history passed on from generation to generation. His practice is inspired by the driving forces and beings that inhabit the landscape and the unwritten rules that maintain the balance between the original world and the human world. Aware that these relationships and this knowledge are rapidly disappearing, he relies on an intuitive narrative and seeks to allegorize.
