ARTISTES DANS LA VILLE : UNE NOUVELLE PLACE POUR L’ART DANS LA CITE (ARTISTS IN THE CITY : A NEW PLACE FOR ART IN THE TOWN)

The organization of the seminar ‘‘Artists in the City : A New Place for Art in the Town’’ was the founding action by CEAAC in 1988 : its aim was to raise the awareness of the public and local politicians about the new presence of art in the city – art getting out of museums, exhibited in unusual places, most notably outside, no longer with a barrier to be crossed in order to gain access to the artwork. The discussion focused on the specificity of ‘‘Art Centres’’ (like CEAAC) which are not museums, galleries, or studios, but spaces for artistic experiment.

This seminar could be considered in retrospect as the public birth of CEAAC (European Centre for Contemporary Art Projects) through which the General Council of the Lower Rhine area, the City of Strasbourg and the Alsace Region hoped to promote contemporary artistic production.
